Waitomo Glowworm Caves

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are one of New Zealand’s most famous natural attractions, located on the North Island in the Waikato region. These caves are known for their bioluminescent glowworms (Arachnocampa luminosa), which create a magical, star-like effect on the ceilings of the caves.

What to Expect

  • Boat Tours: Visitors can take a guided boat tour through the caves to witness the glowworms lighting up the dark surroundings.
  • Cave Formations: The caves also feature stunning stalactites and stalagmites, formed over millions of years.
  • Adventure Caving: For thrill-seekers, options like black water rafting, abseiling, and spelunking are available in the surrounding cave systems like Ruakuri and Aranui Caves.

Best Time to Visit

The caves are open year-round, but visiting during the winter months (May–September) can be less crowded.

Location

Waitomo Caves are about 2.5 hours' drive from Auckland and 1 hour from Hamilton.
